How to make a YouTube thumbnail in five steps

  1. Choose a template that matches the promise of your video. Results and prices suit Big Number, comparisons suit Versus, explainers suit Big Question and travel suits Travel Postcard.
  2. Write a hook of three to five words. The title explains the video; the thumbnail only needs to create the reason to click.
  3. Add your photo or pick a subject. A cut-out PNG with a transparent background gets a white outline automatically, which separates it from the background.
  4. Check it small. Use Preview in a feed to see the design at sidebar size, next to other videos, on desktop and mobile.
  5. Export and upload. Choose 1920 × 1080 or 3840 × 2160, JPG or PNG, and upload it in YouTube Studio under your video’s thumbnail settings.

What makes this maker different

  • Built only for YouTube. Every template is 16:9, and a guide shows where the duration badge will cover your design.
  • Readability first. Headlines use a heavy condensed typeface with outlines and shadows, and long lines shrink to fit instead of overflowing.
  • Private by design. Your photos never leave your device, because everything is drawn in your browser.
  • Honest about AI. AI concept generation is in development. This maker is deliberately manual today, so you get full control.

Thumbnail maker FAQ

Is the Thumio thumbnail maker really free?

Yes. The maker, its templates and all three export sizes are free to use, with no watermark and no account.

Do I need to sign up?

No. Open the page and start designing. Nothing is saved to a server, so download your thumbnail when you are happy with it.

Are my photos uploaded anywhere?

No. Photos are read and drawn by your browser on your own device. They are never sent to Thumio or anyone else, and they disappear when you close the tab.

Which export size should I choose?

YouTube recommends 3840 × 2160, the largest 16:9 size. If you upload from the mobile app, keep the file under 2 MB; a JPG at 1920 × 1080 usually fits comfortably.

Can I use the maker on my phone?

Yes. The maker works in modern mobile browsers. Larger screens make fine adjustments easier, but every control is available on mobile.

Can I use the thumbnails on monetised videos?

Yes. Thumbnails you create are yours to use on your channel, including monetised videos. Make sure you have the rights to any photo you add, and follow YouTube's thumbnail policies.
